Perthes Disease

Perthes disease also known as Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, is a condition that develops in childhood and affects the hip joint. The hip joint is divided into – the ball or femoral head and the socket (acetabulum).

Perthes disease occurs when the blood supply to the rounded head of the femur (thighbone) is temporarily disrupted. Without an adequate blood supply, the bone cells die, a process called avascular necrosis.

The symptoms of Perthes disease are usually a painless limp, and a mild ache in the thigh or knee.

If Perthes disease is left untreated, the femoral head can deform and not fit well within the acetabulum, which can lead to further hip problems.

For treatment of this disease, Dr. Deepak Agrawal will first conduct tests like X-ray and MRI to analyze the stiffness of the backbone and femoral head.
